About Bayview Marina
Bayview Marina is a secure locked-basin marina less than five kilometres from Darwin’s CBD, designed around the tidal and cyclone realities of the Top End. Its 128 floating berths accommodate local and visiting vessels up to approximately 20 metres overall, seven metres beam and 2.5 metres draft. For crews spending a season in Darwin, preparing for the Kimberley or staging towards Indonesia, the marina’s defining strength is protection: a controlled water level inside a basin that can be lowered during extreme weather.
Access through Sadgroves Creek and the lock makes this marina different from an open harbour facility. Darwin’s tidal range can reach around eight metres, and the marina cannot be entered at spring high and low extremes. First-time arrivals should work directly with the lockmaster, plan the creek transit on an appropriate tide and follow current local instructions. Once inside, the reward is a stable berth environment largely separated from the harbour’s dramatic water-level changes.
Everyday owner facilities are practical and secure. Berths have power and fresh water, while fob-controlled amenities include toilets and showers. Laundry, rubbish and recycling, allocated parking, trolleys, a common area and barbecue support longer stays. CCTV covers the lock and marina buildings, and electronic access limits casual movement onto the pontoons.
We think Bayview Marina is at its best for tropical-season security, multihull-friendly dimensions and Darwin passage preparation. It is not a fuel or boatyard destination: bulk refuelling happens outside the marina, sewage pump-out is not provided and haul-out must be arranged elsewhere. The creek approach, lock booking and biosecurity requirements demand more preparation than a simple harbour berth. For crews who respect those procedures, Bayview provides a valuable Top End base—close to Darwin services, protected from tidal movement and well suited to owners who need a secure place to wait, provision and plan the next leg.
The lock-controlled basin creates a distinctive ownership proposition. Once inside, boats avoid the full daily tidal range, which can simplify lines, boarding and routine checks. That benefit is especially meaningful for long-term berth holders who visit frequently, though every arrival and departure needs to respect operating procedures. To us, Bayview stands out for protected berthing, Darwin convenience and passage-staging potential. It is a purposeful northern base for capable crews, rather than a casual marina to enter without advance coordination.
Services
Bayview Marina provides 128 secure floating berths for vessels up to about 20 metres overall, seven metres beam and 2.5 metres draft. Pontoons offer 240-volt power and fresh water, with owners supplying compliant hoses and 15-amp leads. Electronic fobs control pontoon, toilet and shower access, while CCTV monitors the lock and marina buildings.
Facilities include toilets, showers, coin-operated laundry, rubbish and recycling, allocated parking, trolleys, a barbecue and common area. The lock normally operates published daily hours, with advance notice and a call-out fee for approved after-hours movements. There is no sewage pump-out and no marina fuel wharf; only approved small fuel containers are permitted, with bulk fuelling arranged outside. Repairs and haul-out are handled at other Darwin facilities. Confirm lock dimensions, tidal window, berth allocation, insurance and NT aquatic biosecurity clearance before arrival.
Before booking, obtain current lock operating hours, required notice, VHF or phone contact and maximum vessel dimensions. Confirm the berth’s power connection, potable-water availability, bathroom access, parking, cyclone plan and owner responsibilities during alerts. International or interstate arrivals should complete all biosecurity and border requirements before requesting normal marina entry.
Ideal for
Darwin-based owners, multihull crews, tropical cruisers and passagemakers staging for the Kimberley, Tiwi Islands or Indonesia. It is particularly strong for vessels needing a stable locked basin and secure longer-stay facilities.
What we love
- A locked basin that removes daily tidal movement from the berth.
- Secure floating accommodation for 128 local and visiting vessels.
- Useful beam and draft allowances for many multihulls.
- Power, water, laundry, parking and controlled-access amenities for longer stays.
- Close road access to Darwin CBD while retaining a protected marina setting.
To keep in mind
The creek and lock are tide-dependent, so contact the lockmaster before every first arrival. Spring extremes can close access. There is no pump-out or bulk fuel inside, and haul-out is elsewhere. Overseas and some northern arrivals must complete NT aquatic biosecurity requirements.
