About Christmas Cove Marina
Christmas Cove is a small council-managed harbour at Penneshaw, giving local and visiting boats a protected foothold on Kangaroo Island’s eastern shore. The compact facility includes a ramp, mooring pontoon, bookable berths and breakwater rather than the broad service list of a commercial marina. We think its appeal is wonderfully specific: it places a boat within walking reach of an island town while offering shelter from a famously energetic stretch of water.
Kangaroo Island Council describes the redeveloped cove as a mini marina capable of accepting different vessels. Current berth allocation is handled through the council’s booking system, and historical berth numbers should not be treated as live inventory. Users must occupy only the allocated or ticketed position and follow posted conditions. Manoeuvring within the cove and to a berth is required under motor rather than sail, which reflects the limited space.
The facility is deliberately basic. Council explicitly advises that there is no shore power, showers, toilets, potable water or fuel at Christmas Cove. Crews therefore need to arrive self-contained, fill tanks and organise fuel elsewhere, and use town facilities responsibly. Nothing may be discharged into the cove, including treated greywater, and pontoons or walkways must remain clear of dinghies and gear. Swimming and diving are restricted except for legitimate vessel needs.
Penneshaw brings the location to life. Ferry activity, food, accommodation and island transport are close, while Backstairs Passage creates exciting onward options for experienced coastal crews. The same passage is exposed to wind, tide and sea state, so an available berth does not make the approach routine. What stands out to us is the reward of stepping ashore on Kangaroo Island from such an intimate, characterful harbour.
Our take is that Christmas Cove works best for prepared cruising yachts, fishing boats and trailer craft whose crews understand its limits. Book first, study the council soundings and facility rules, and carry sufficient water, fuel and power reserves. With that preparation, the cove offers something far more memorable than a generic marina: a sheltered island arrival beside one of South Australia’s most distinctive coastal island towns and local communities.
Services
Christmas Cove provides a council boat ramp, mooring pontoon, bookable marina berths and breakwater protection. Berths must be reserved through Kangaroo Island Council, and users may occupy only the allocated or ticketed position. Historical references to berth totals are not a substitute for current availability. Confirm vessel length, beam, draft, arrival time and the specific booking conditions before passage.
There is no shore power, shower, toilet, potable water or fuel available at the facility. Crews must provision, refuel and charge batteries elsewhere, then manage waste without discharging any solid, liquid or gas into the cove. Mooring lines must meet council requirements, rigging should be secured against noise, and pontoons and walkways must remain clear of unattended gear.
Boats must manoeuvre within Christmas Cove under motor, not sail. Swimming and diving beside moorings are restricted except for valid maintenance or safe-passage purposes, and only light-tackle fishing is permitted under the council conditions. Review the current soundings plan, Backstairs Passage weather, tide and sea state before arrival. Trailer users should also check launching fees, ramp rules and parking arrangements.
Ideal for
Prepared Kangaroo Island cruisers, fishing boats and trailer craft wanting a bookable protected position at Penneshaw. It suits self-sufficient crews who value destination access more than shore-power or full-service marina amenities.
What we love
- A compact protected harbour beside the Penneshaw township.
- Bookable council berths for visiting recreational vessels.
- Boat ramp, mooring pontoon and breakwater in one facility.
- A memorable boat-based arrival onto Kangaroo Island.
- Backstairs Passage cruising directly beyond the cove entrance.
To keep in mind
Book an allocated berth before arrival and study the council soundings and rules. Christmas Cove has no power, showers, toilets, potable water or fuel. Approach conservatively in Backstairs Passage conditions and enter, leave and manoeuvre inside the cove under motor.
