About Cockatoo Marine
Cockatoo Marine’s visitor marina at Camber Wharf offers one of Sydney Harbour’s most memorable ways to arrive somewhere for lunch, an afternoon of exploring or an overnight stay. The pontoons sit on the southern side of World Heritage-listed Cockatoo Island, surrounded by layers of shipbuilding and industrial history. We think the destination is the attraction here: this is less a conventional service marina and more a compact harbour gateway to an island that rewards time ashore.
The operator lists ten berths for boats up to 32 feet and one berth for a boat up to 42 feet, with a published maximum beam of 4.1 metres for the larger position. Bigger vessels may sometimes be accommodated overnight by prior discussion. An overhead crane creates a 10-metre mast-height restriction on inner berths, so skippers must study the marina plan rather than selecting a space by appearance alone. Precise vessel dimensions should be supplied when enquiring.
Day berthing is sold in four-hour blocks on a first-come, first-served basis, and bookings are not taken for these shorter visits. Overnight stays can be reserved and paid in advance; the operator recommends booking at least 48 hours ahead, especially for weekends and holidays. That distinction makes planning straightforward. Arrive with a backup if seeking a daytime berth at a busy time, while an overnight crew should secure the correct berth before leaving home.
Once alongside, visitors can explore the island’s convict and shipyard heritage, walking routes, viewpoints, cafés and accommodation. Toilets are available around the island, and the Marina Café & Bar is close to Camber Wharf. These are destination amenities rather than a promise of full marina utilities. Fuel, shore power, potable water and pump-out are not clearly advertised with visitor berthing, so we would plan those needs elsewhere unless the operator confirms otherwise.
Our take is that Cockatoo Marine is ideal for a special Sydney Harbour stop rather than a technical service call. Island rules form part of the stay: private visitors cannot bring alcohol ashore, pets are not permitted apart from assistance animals, and fees apply to every berth. Review the current conditions, weather and vessel restrictions before arrival. With that preparation, tying up beneath the island’s historic cranes is a wonderfully distinctive way to experience the harbour.
Services
The Camber Wharf visitor marina provides ten berths for boats up to 32 feet and one berth for a boat up to 42 feet, with the larger berth limited to a published 4.1-metre beam. Inner berths have a 10-metre mast-height restriction beneath an overhead crane. Larger boats may sometimes be considered for overnight stays, but only after direct discussion with the operator.
Short visits are charged in four-hour blocks and allocated first come, first served; they cannot be booked. Overnight berths require advance reservation and payment, with at least 48 hours’ notice recommended for popular periods. Provide exact length, beam, draft and air draft, study the marina plan and carry suitable lines and fenders. Commercial-vessel use of nearby Camber Ferry Wharf requires a separate enquiry.
Island toilets, cafés, heritage attractions and accommodation are accessible ashore, but fuel, pump-out, shore power and potable water should not be assumed. All berthing attracts a fee. Visitors must follow Harbour Trust rules, including no privately brought alcohol and no pets other than assistance animals. Check the current rate, berth position, cancellation terms and after-hours contact before departure.
Ideal for
Small motorboats and compact cruising boats seeking a short or overnight Sydney Harbour destination with exceptional heritage appeal. It is best for self-sufficient crews whose vessel fits the published length, beam and air-draft limits.
What we love
- The rare experience of arriving by private boat at Cockatoo Island.
- Sheltered short-stay and overnight berths at Camber Wharf.
- World Heritage shipyard and convict history immediately ashore.
- Cafés, viewpoints and accommodation within the island precinct.
- A genuinely distinctive stop in the centre of Sydney Harbour.
To keep in mind
Day berths are first come, first served, while overnight stays must be booked and prepaid. Check length, beam and the 10-metre inner-berth air-draft limit carefully. All berthing is paid, pets are restricted and visitors cannot bring alcohol ashore; full marina utilities should not be assumed.
