About Constitution Dock
Constitution Dock is one of Hobart's most recognisable waterfront basins, sitting beside Victoria Dock at the edge of the city and the historic Salamanca precinct. It is not a conventional floating marina with a standard catalogue of berths. Instead, visiting boats use casual alongside accommodation managed through TasPorts, entering beneath a lifting bridge whose opening must be coordinated in advance. We think that process is well worth understanding because the reward is an extraordinary position in the heart of Hobart.
TasPorts accepts casual-stay requests through its online berthing process and Southern Operations team. Current guidance says bridge openings can be booked for 9am, 11am or 2pm, with requests made within seven days of arrival. Applications require accurate registration, overall length, beam and draft. A submitted form is not permission to enter: crews should wait for confirmation, follow the assigned timing and keep communications available as directed by the port.
Once inside, the character of the dock becomes the main attraction. Fishing vessels, heritage craft and visiting yachts share a waterfront known internationally as the finish of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. Salamanca's restaurants, cafés and market, the central business district, provisioning and accommodation are all reachable on foot. For cruising crews who have spent days on passage, being able to step ashore into the city without arranging transport is a genuine luxury.
The historic infrastructure also calls for realistic expectations. Berthing is largely alongside rather than in an individual finger pen, so rafting, fendering and line arrangements may differ from a modern marina. Facilities and utility access depend on the allocated position and current operating arrangements. The lifting bridge, commercial harbour movements and local events can shape arrival and departure timing. We would confirm shore power, water, bathrooms, waste and maximum stay rather than infer them from the location.
Our take is that Constitution Dock is strongest as a memorable Hobart destination for self-reliant cruising crews. The central setting and maritime atmosphere are exceptional, while the managed bridge transit adds a little planning rather than removing the opportunity. Provide complete vessel details, keep the schedule flexible and arrive prepared for alongside handling. Done properly, a stay here places the boat inside the story of Hobart's working waterfront rather than merely near it.
Services
Constitution Dock offers casual alongside berthing managed by TasPorts. Crews must submit the official berthing request with vessel registration, overall length, beam and draft, then wait for approval and an assigned position. Current TasPorts guidance provides bookable lifting-bridge openings at 9am, 11am and 2pm, with requests accepted within the seven-day window before arrival.
The dock's city position gives walking access to Salamanca, central Hobart, shops, dining, accommodation and transport. However, it should not be treated as a full-service recreational marina. Shore power, potable water, bathrooms, waste disposal, security access and permitted length of stay can vary by berth and operating period, so every required service should be confirmed with Southern Operations.
Before arrival, ask about bridge-call procedures, radio monitoring, line and fender requirements, rafting, depth and commercial traffic. Carry equipment suitable for alongside berthing and allow schedule margin if weather or port operations change. Fuel, pump-out, laundry, repairs and specialist marine trades should be arranged separately unless TasPorts specifically confirms availability. Event periods, especially around major sailing programmes, may materially affect access and space.
Ideal for
Self-reliant cruising yachts and suitable powerboats seeking a distinctive central-Hobart stop, especially crews comfortable with alongside berthing, scheduled bridge openings and active-port procedures.
What we love
- A berth within walking distance of Salamanca and central Hobart.
- An authentic position inside the city's working maritime precinct.
- Direct connection with the Sydney to Hobart finish-line atmosphere.
- Bookable bridge openings that make access predictable when confirmed.
- A memorable alternative to an ordinary suburban marina.
To keep in mind
Bridge transit and berthing require TasPorts approval; an application alone is not confirmation. Ask specifically about utilities and rafting conditions, carry substantial fenders, and retain flexibility around weather, port operations and major events.
