About Crowdy Head Boat Harbour

Crowdy Head Boat Harbour is a small working harbour on the NSW Mid North Coast, valued because boats can reach the sea without crossing a river bar. Formed behind its breakwater in 1964 and extended in the 1970s, it has long served commercial fishers and recreational crews near Harrington and the Manning Valley. What stands out to us is that straightforward coastal access, particularly in a region where bar conditions often shape every departure.

The harbour is currently undergoing a major public-infrastructure renewal rather than operating as a conventional private marina. Transport for NSW began onsite work in September 2025 on a programme expected to take about 12 months, weather permitting. The project removes the ageing jetties, dredges the harbour and installs a new heavy-duty floating pontoon. Plans provide 19 berths with individual water and electricity, including one temporary or short-term position for overnight or distressed vessels.

That investment should make the harbour safer and more useful, but construction changes the immediate experience. Parts of the basin may be closed, machinery and piling can affect movements, and advertised completion timing is not a promise that berths are commissioned. Crews should use current Transport notices, onsite signs and local directions before entering. A future berth shown in the project plan should never be treated as available until the responsible authority confirms it.

Beyond the works, Crowdy Head offers a distinctly local coastal stop. The fishing harbour, lighthouse, beaches and nearby national-park landscapes create a quieter alternative to larger Mid North Coast centres. Anglers gain direct access to offshore grounds, while coastal passage-makers may see strategic value in a protected basin. Services are limited compared with a resort marina, so fuel, food, repairs and onward weather planning should be organised conservatively.

Our take is that Crowdy Head's strength is functional rather than luxurious: a bar-free harbour with renewed public berthing infrastructure in progress. Once completed, serviced pontoons should materially improve the stop for local and visiting boats. Until then, verify access, dredging status and temporary-berth arrangements immediately before travel. Arrive self-sufficient and respectful of commercial users, and Crowdy Head can be a valuable harbour with authentic Mid North Coast character.

Services

Transport for NSW's Crowdy Head upgrade provides for a replacement floating pontoon with 19 berths of varying sizes. The design includes individual water and electricity connections and one temporary or short-term berth intended for overnight or distressed vessels. Harbour dredging and removal of the decommissioned second jetty form part of the same project, aimed at improving clearance and modernising on-water infrastructure.

Construction started in September 2025 and was scheduled for about 12 months, subject to tides, weather and site conditions. During works, harbour areas can be inaccessible and vessel movements may be affected. Confirm commissioning and access from current Transport notices; do not assume that planned utilities or berths are available simply because the new structure is visible.

This is a public working harbour, not a full-service resort marina. Before arrival, verify short-stay eligibility, allocated length, depth, power connection and local contact procedures. Fuel, pump-out, showers, laundry, waste and repair support should be independently confirmed. Monitor weather and construction directions, carry suitable lines and fenders, and keep clear of commercial operations and restricted work zones.

Ideal for

Mid North Coast fishing boats and self-reliant coastal cruisers who value a protected, bar-free harbour and can work with public-berth procedures and temporary construction constraints.

What we love

  • Direct sea access without a river-bar crossing.
  • A major renewal replacing ageing jetties with floating pontoons.
  • Planned water and electricity at each of 19 berths.
  • A dedicated temporary position for overnight or distressed vessels.
  • Authentic fishing-harbour character near beaches and national parks.

To keep in mind

Construction is scheduled through 2026 and can restrict access. Confirm the pontoon, dredging and short-term berth status immediately before arrival. Do not expect full marina amenities or treat the emergency-style berth as guaranteed visitor accommodation.
