About Cullen Bay Marina
Cullen Bay Marina is a lock-controlled Darwin marina only about two kilometres from the CBD, protected from the region's large tidal range behind an all-tides entrance system. The operator offers long- and short-term berths from approximately 10 to 25 metres, with power and water throughout. What stands out to us is the combination of practical Top End infrastructure and a lively precinct where restaurants, lawns, beach and sunset views sit immediately outside the gates.
Entry is coordinated with the Lockmaster rather than approached like an open harbour. Crews must make contact at least one hour before the desired transit and reconfirm 15 minutes beforehand. Standard movements run on the hour from 6am to 11pm, with other times by special arrangement. Published maximums are about 25 metres length, 8.5 metres beam and 2.5 to 3 metres draft depending on tide, so accurate dimensions are essential.
Inside, berth holders have water, electricity, toilets, showers, laundry, refuse points, trolleys and parking. Security patrols and video surveillance support the protected environment. Fuel is outside the lock at the ferry pontoon, which means crews should decide whether to refuel before entering or plan another coordinated transit. Haul-out facilities handle monohulls up to roughly 45 feet and 30 tonnes under current published limits.
Cullen Bay's shore-side setting is a genuine advantage. Restaurants, cafés, takeaway options and sunset lawns make crew downtime easy, while Darwin's broader supplies and services are close by. Permanent liveaboard use and domestic pets are not permitted under the current marina rules. Vessels arriving from international waters or certain interstate locations may also require marine-pest inspection or treatment before entering, alongside normal border and biosecurity processes.
Our take is that Cullen Bay is a highly capable Darwin base for owners prepared to plan around the lock. The controlled basin offers stability that would be difficult to achieve in open tidal water, while the surrounding precinct adds warmth and convenience. Contact the Lockmaster early, understand fuel and quarantine requirements, and review cyclone procedures before settling in. Those steps turn the marina's operating rules into the foundation of a comfortable Top End stay. The structured approach ultimately makes movements predictable once everyone understands the routine.
Services
Cullen Bay Marina provides short- and long-term berths from approximately 10 to 25 metres, all with water and electricity. Facilities include toilets, showers, laundry, refuse disposal, trolleys and car parking, supported by security patrols and video surveillance. Fuel is located outside the marina at the ferry pontoon rather than beside the internal berths.
The lock operates scheduled movements on the hour from 6am to 11pm, with after-hours passage by special arrangement. Contact the Lockmaster at least one hour ahead and reconfirm 15 minutes before arrival. Published limits are 25 metres overall, 8.5 metres beam and 2.5 to 3 metres draft depending on tide. Haul-out service is available for monohulls up to about 45 feet and 30 tonnes.
Provide complete vessel details and confirm berth, lock timing, fuel plan and power connection. Permanent liveaboard use and domestic pets are prohibited. Check marine-pest, biosecurity and international-arrival rules before entry, as inspection or treatment may apply. Longer-term customers should study cyclone preparation and owner obligations and clarify insurance, parking, contractor access and unattended-vessel procedures.
Ideal for
Darwin-based and visiting yachts or powerboats wanting an all-tides, lock-protected marina with practical amenities and a walkable dining precinct close to the CBD.
