About Dungeness Boat Harbour
Dungeness Boat Harbour at Lucinda is a busy public marine-access precinct rather than a conventional berth marina. Its four-lane concrete ramp, pontoons, parking and washdown facilities serve anglers, tourism operators and island transfers heading into the Hinchinbrook Channel. We think its greatest strength is the sense of possibility at launch: Hinchinbrook Island rises across the water, while sheltered creeks, reef routes and some of North Queensland's most celebrated fishing grounds lie beyond the ramp.
Hinchinbrook Shire describes the ramp as all-tide and provides a large parking area plus boat washdown space. A new 13-metre commercial pontoon was completed in 2026 to improve marine access and support operators, adding to the network of public, fishing and commercial jetty infrastructure around Dungeness. These assets handle short operational stops and passenger transfers; they should not be interpreted as overnight marina berths or private vessel storage.
The wider Lucinda area supports a boating day with nearby fuel, supplies, food and accommodation, although none should be assumed to sit on a staffed marina dock. Public toilets, fishing areas and ample vehicle or trailer parking strengthen the shore-side offer. The iconic Lucinda bulk sugar jetty is a major landmark and a reminder that this otherwise relaxed setting includes working-port activity. Repairs and specialist marine work may require arrangements in Ingham or larger regional centres.
The Hinchinbrook Channel is magnificent but demands respect. Crocodiles, fast-moving tides, shallow banks, changing sand and mangrove-lined waterways all influence safe navigation. Boats heading offshore must also account for reef zoning, tropical weather and considerable distances. Current charts, official notices and local knowledge matter, particularly near Enterprise Channel or when low water reduces clearance for deeper craft. The council's viewing resources can help crews assess conditions before launching.
Our take is that Dungeness is an outstanding launch base for prepared anglers, charter guests and island-bound crews. It succeeds through access, capacity and proximity to exceptional waterways rather than through luxury marina services. Check the ramp, channel, tide, weather and parking before travel, provision in Lucinda or Ingham, and carry the right safety equipment. Thoughtful planning turns Dungeness into a superb gateway to Hinchinbrook's wild coastal landscape.
Services
Dungeness provides a four-lane public concrete boat ramp promoted by Hinchinbrook Shire as all-tide, with a large paved parking area and dedicated boat washdown space. Floating access infrastructure supports boarding and retrieval. A new 13-metre pontoon completed in 2026 improves commercial and passenger operations, complementing the fishing, public and commercial jetties in the precinct.
These facilities support launching and short operational stops rather than permanent or overnight berthing. Nearby Lucinda businesses provide fuel, bait, ice, food and accommodation under their own current hours and terms. The public precinct does not advertise marina shore power, pump-out, a boatyard or travel lift. Specialist repairs may need to be arranged in Ingham or another regional service centre.
Prepare away from the ramp, use pontoons considerately and move the trailer promptly. Check current tide, Enterprise Channel depth, weather, port activity and official notices. Carry charts, reliable communications and tropical offshore safety equipment. Wash the boat only in the designated area, follow Great Barrier Reef zoning and fishing rules, and maintain strict crocodile awareness near every bank, creek and water access point.
Ideal for
Trailer-boat anglers, charter operators and Hinchinbrook Island transfer crews needing high-capacity public launching, parking and washdown access close to the channel and reef routes.
What we love
- A four-lane public ramp built for substantial regional demand.
- A newly completed pontoon supporting safer marine transfers.
- Large trailer parking and a dedicated boat washdown area.
- Immediate access to the spectacular Hinchinbrook Channel.
- Lucinda's fishing culture and dramatic island backdrop.
To keep in mind
This is a public launch precinct, not an overnight marina. Confirm fuel and supplies with nearby businesses. Tides, shallow banks, port activity, tropical weather and crocodiles all require careful planning and current local information.
