About Elizabeth Street Pier

Elizabeth Street Pier sits within Hobart's working Sullivans Cove waterfront, beside the separate MAST-owned Sullivans Cove Public Marina. The distinction matters: the pier supports port and event operations, while the adjacent marina provides up to nine public pontoon berths for vessels no longer than 15 metres. We think the location is exceptional for a short city visit, placing crews beside central Hobart's dining, markets, historic streets and harbour activity.

Ordinary use of the public marina is limited to five hours. Boaters wanting a longer or overnight stay must scan the QR code displayed on the marina piles, provide vessel and contact details and receive a maximum authorised stay time from MAST. Space is not guaranteed, and the working Elizabeth Street Pier itself should not be treated as casual public berthing. Event or operational use requires separate permission from the relevant authority or organiser.

The marina has lighting and supports loading and unloading, with real-time berth images published to help crews assess space before arrival. Car parking and public toilets are available nearby, while central Hobart supplies cafés, restaurants, groceries and transport within walking distance. Fuel is not provided at these pontoons; MAST directs boaters towards confirmed services at Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania or Derwent Sailing Squadron facilities.

Sullivans Cove is an active port and event basin. A five-knot zone covers the cove, alongside the general obligation to operate slowly near vessels, structures and shore. Passenger craft, tour boats, commercial movements and major race fleets can reshape access, particularly over summer. Fuel, pump-out, shore power, showers, laundry, repairs and long-term security should never be assumed at the short-stay pontoons.

Our take is that Sullivans Cove Public Marina is a very useful brief-stop facility in a superb position, while Elizabeth Street Pier remains part of the working harbour around it. Respecting that separation prevents confusion. Check the live image, signage, weather, port notices and five-knot rule before arrival. For anything beyond five hours, secure approval first. Used correctly, the facility gives cruising crews an unusually direct and enjoyable doorway into Hobart for a meal, provisions or a relaxed short city walk.

Services

The MAST-owned Sullivans Cove Public Marina at Elizabeth Pier provides up to nine pontoon berths for vessels no longer than 15 metres. The ordinary maximum stay is five hours. Crews seeking a longer or overnight stay must scan the onsite QR code, submit vessel and contact details and receive an authorised maximum stay time. Elizabeth Street Pier itself is a separate working and event facility.

The public marina has lighting and allows loading and unloading. MAST publishes a live berth image to help users assess current space. Parking, public toilets and central Hobart services are nearby. Fuel is available elsewhere through confirmed Derwent facilities; the public marina does not advertise a fuel dock, pump-out, shore power, showers, laundry, boatyard or permanent security.

Check availability, signage and port notices before entering. Observe the Sullivans Cove five-knot zone, keep clear of commercial or event operations and prepare lines and fenders early. Do not assume the Constitution Dock booking process applies here. Longer stays require MAST approval, while pier or event berthing must be arranged separately with the responsible authority.

Ideal for

Cruising boats up to 15 metres needing a brief central-Hobart stop for loading, supplies or time ashore, with longer stays only where MAST grants specific approval.

What we love

  • Up to nine public pontoon berths in central Sullivans Cove.
  • A live camera image that helps crews assess berth availability.
  • Immediate walking access to Hobart's historic waterfront and CBD.
  • Clear five-hour access designed to share scarce city berthing fairly.
  • A memorable working-harbour setting beside major maritime events.

To keep in mind

The public marina and Elizabeth Street Pier have different managers and purposes. Berths are limited to vessels up to 15 metres and normally five hours. Scan the onsite QR code for longer-stay approval and respect the five-knot zone.
