About Esperance Bandy Creek Boat Harbour
Esperance Bandy Creek Boat Harbour is a protected working harbour about 10 kilometres east of Esperance, serving recreational boats, commercial fishing, tourism and charter operators. The west side accommodates recreational vessels while the east supports the commercial fleet and heavier marine work. What stands out to us is the range: owners can secure a pen, launch a trailer boat, refuel or arrange a slipway while families enjoy calm beaches and access to the extraordinary Recherche Archipelago.
The recreational western basin contains 20 secure fixed pens: fourteen at 11 metres, two at 12 metres and four at 15 metres. Pens have single-phase power, water, lighting and gated access. The commercial eastern side provides 26 pens from 15 to 25 metres with power, water, lighting and secure entry, while two 30-metre berths sit at the trawler jetty. Casual, short-term and long-term accommodation is offered by enquiry, but demand is high.
The 150-metre service wharf provides power, water, lighting and refuelling, with diesel supplied through a local delivery operator. A private 60-tonne slipway on the north-eastern side serves suitable vessels by arrangement. The western side has a two-lane boat ramp with catwalk plus car and trailer parking. Public toilets and cold-water showers sit near the ramp, while penholders have a separate east-side amenities block. Summy's Park adds barbecues and fish-cleaning facilities.
Harbour depths vary significantly. Transport WA publishes nominal recreational-pen depth around 2 metres, increasing to 4.2 metres at the outer pens; commercial pens average about 3.5 metres. Vessels drawing more than 3 metres should seek current depth advice from the Esperance office. Beyond the breakwaters, the Southern Ocean can change rapidly. Island and reef cruising demands current charts, strong weather judgement, adequate range and respect for conservation zones.
Our take is that Bandy Creek is a capable regional base with unusual breadth for both working and recreational boats. Secure pens, fuel, a ramp, slipway and useful shore facilities support serious boating, while beaches and island scenery keep the destination enjoyable. Confirm availability, berth depth, fuel delivery and slipway acceptance before arrival. With conservative offshore planning, the harbour provides an excellent gateway to one of Western Australia's most spectacular coastlines.
Services
Bandy Creek Boat Harbour provides 20 recreational pens from 11 to 15 metres on the west side and 26 commercial pens from 15 to 25 metres on the east. Two additional 30-metre berths serve larger vessels at the trawler jetty. Pens include power, water, lighting and secure gated access. Casual, short-term and long-term accommodation is available by application and subject to strong demand.
The eastern service wharf offers power, water, lighting and diesel delivery. A privately operated 60-tonne slipway supports suitable vessel maintenance by arrangement. The west side has a two-lane boat ramp, catwalk and trailer parking. Public toilets, cold-water showers, barbecues and fish-cleaning facilities support recreational crews, with separate amenities for east-side penholders.
Confirm pen availability, dimensions, utilities and current fees before travelling. Supply draft, displacement and service needs for commercial or slipway enquiries. Boats drawing more than 3 metres should request current channel and basin-depth advice. Check Southern Ocean weather, charts, conservation zones and notices, carry reliable communications and plan generous fuel reserves before heading towards the Recherche Archipelago.
Ideal for
Esperance recreational boaters, commercial operators and capable visiting cruisers needing secure pens, fuel, ramp access or slipway support before exploring the Southern Ocean and Recherche Archipelago.
What we love
- Separate recreational and commercial basins serving varied vessels.
- Secure powered pens with water and lighting provided.
- A service wharf, diesel delivery and 60-tonne private slipway.
- Two-lane launching, parking, showers and fish-cleaning facilities.
- Calm harbour beaches beside spectacular island cruising grounds.
To keep in mind
Vessel accommodation is in high demand and requires advance confirmation. Depth varies across pens, with deeper-draft boats needing current advice. Southern Ocean passages demand conservative weather decisions, adequate range and reliable communications.
