About Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour

Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour is one of Western Australia's defining working waterfronts, combining commercial fishing, charter operations, recreational pens and a lively hospitality precinct beside the Indian Ocean. Boats, workshops, seafood businesses and public boardwalks all share the harbour's energy. We think that mix is what makes it special: this is not a secluded marina enclave, but a real maritime district where a vessel can be based within walking distance of Fremantle's restaurants, accommodation and cultural life.

The Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure manages extensive fixed and floating accommodation across several jetties, with pen sizes ranging from smaller recreational spaces to large alongside berths. The harbour can handle substantial commercial and visiting craft, including designated casual berths for vessels up to about 40 metres. Water, metered shore power, fire services, CCTV, security-gate access and after-hours patrols support penholders, though the exact service level depends on the assigned jetty and berth.

A fuel wharf at Molfetta Quay supplies diesel and unleaded petrol through a card-operated provider. Parking, waste-oil points, bins and spill-response equipment add practical support. A dedicated penholder building completed in 2026 brings bathrooms, a kitchen, laundry, covered barbecue space and accessible toilets, along with storage and trolley areas. What stands out to us is the effort to improve everyday owner facilities while keeping the harbour's authentic fishing and commercial purpose intact.

The location is excellent for confident coastal boaters. Rottnest Island is the obvious draw, with Carnac and Penguin islands also part of the wider Fremantle boating landscape. Ocean conditions, shipping movements and busy harbour traffic still require careful planning, and pen availability is never something to assume. The neighbouring Challenger and Success harbours are separate facilities with their own berth allocations and rules, even though the waterfront can feel like one connected marine precinct from shore.

Our take is that Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour suits owners and operators who value capability, access and atmosphere in equal measure. It is especially compelling for working boats, charter vessels and larger recreational craft that benefit from a broad marine-services ecosystem. Apply early, confirm berth dimensions and utilities, and note that live-aboard use is not permitted in the Fishing Boat Harbour. With those boundaries understood, this is a highly distinctive metropolitan base with genuine ocean adventure on its doorstep.

Services

The harbour offers a large mix of fixed and floating pens, including commercial, recreational, multihull and alongside accommodation. Individual lengths and service arrangements vary by jetty, with some casual and visiting berths able to take vessels up to about 40 metres. Pen infrastructure can include metered single- or three-phase power, water, fire services, CCTV, security gates and after-hours patrols. Applications are required and accommodation remains subject to availability.

Diesel and unleaded petrol are available from the Molfetta Quay refuelling wharf using the provider's fuel card. Penholders also have access to rubbish bins, waste-oil receptacles, spill kits, parking and secure trolley or storage areas where designated. The newer penholder facility adds bathrooms, kitchen and laundry amenities, a covered barbecue area and accessible toilets. Live-aboard accommodation is not offered.

Commercial marine trades, boat storage and repair businesses operate around the broader harbour precinct, but scope and access should be booked directly with each provider. We have not verified a general public pump-out or an on-site travel lift as a standard inclusion for this listing. Before arrival, confirm the assigned berth, approach, power requirement, parking conditions and fuel-card arrangements, and check current weather, coast-camera and notices-to-mariners information.

Ideal for

Commercial fishing and charter operators, larger recreational vessels and experienced coastal crews wanting a serviced Fremantle base near Rottnest Island.

What we love

  • An authentic working maritime atmosphere
  • Extensive berth options for varied vessels
  • Card-operated diesel and petrol nearby
  • Excellent new penholder amenities
  • Walkable access to Fremantle's waterfront life

To keep in mind

Berth demand, sizes and utilities vary across the harbour, so apply early and confirm the exact allocation. Live-aboard use is not permitted, neighbouring harbours operate separately, and fuel requires the provider's card. Check coastal conditions and current marine notices before every departure.
