About Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club Marina
Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club Marina sits on the freshwater side of the lower Murray near the river mouth, backed by one of Australia's longest-established sailing communities. The club traces its origins to 1854, and the marina remains closely connected to racing, cruising and the social life of Goolwa. We think that heritage gives the place a warmth that is difficult to manufacture: boats here are not simply stored, but become part of an active club waterfront.
The marina accommodates 106 boats up to 12 metres, with power and water connected. Berth licences may be purchased or sub-leased, and senior club membership is required for those arrangements. Twelve pens are reserved for visiting boats, while the facility also provides around 180 metres of casual jetty space. Availability changes, so visiting skippers and prospective berth holders should contact the club manager before relying on a particular pen or length of stay.
Trailer sailors and lifting-keel yachts are especially well represented because they suit the relatively shallow Lower Murray Lakes and Coorong waters. Powerboats are also increasingly part of the marina community. A two-lane boat ramp allows launching and retrieval in a broad range of conditions. What stands out to us is the flexibility: owners can keep a compact cruising boat in the marina, launch a trailerable yacht, join a club event or use Goolwa as the beginning of a longer inland-waterway exploration.
Clubhouse access adds real value for members and eligible visitors. Facilities include toilets, hot showers, a kitchen, barbecue, tea and coffee, lounge and licensed bar, with weather information and communications support available when the clubhouse is staffed. Visiting members of recognised yacht and sailing clubs are welcomed and can take part in racing, cruising and social activities after checking in with the manager or a committee member.
Our take is that GRYC Marina is ideal for sailors who appreciate community, practical simplicity and the distinctive shallow-water cruising of the lower Murray. Draft and local water levels matter, particularly beyond the immediate Goolwa channel, so study current charts, barrage information and club cruising notes. Confirm membership eligibility, berth dimensions and shore-service conditions before committing. For the right boat and owner, this is a characterful base with history, knowledge and companionship built in.
Services
The club marina provides 106 berths for vessels up to 12 metres, with electricity and water connected. Berth licences may be sold or sub-leased, but senior GRYC membership is required. Twelve pens are set aside for visitors, and approximately 180 metres of jetty space can support casual mooring. All visitor and longer-term availability should be confirmed with the club manager before arrival.
A two-lane ramp supports launching and retrieval in most weather, making the marina particularly convenient for trailer sailors and lifting-keel boats. The adjoining clubhouse offers members toilets, hot showers, kitchen and barbecue facilities, tea and coffee, a lounge and licensed bar. Internet access supports weather checks, and the club maintains radio listening capability while the clubhouse is staffed.
The Lower Murray Lakes and Coorong are shallow-water environments, so berth suitability is only one part of vessel planning. Confirm draft, current water levels, channel guidance and any barrage-related operating information before cruising beyond familiar areas. Visiting members of other yacht or sailing clubs should report to the manager or a committee member on arrival. Permanent or sub-leased berth enquiries should include the boat's exact length, beam, draft and keel configuration.
Ideal for
Trailer sailors, lifting-keel yachts, compact powerboats and club-oriented cruisers exploring Goolwa, the Lower Murray Lakes and Coorong.
What we love
- A marina rooted in sailing history
- Power and water across 106 berths
- Twelve pens reserved for visitors
- A practical two-lane launching ramp
- Welcoming clubhouse and sailing community
To keep in mind
Senior membership is required to purchase or sub-lease a berth licence, and visitor space should be arranged before arrival. Boats with deeper fixed keels need careful route and water-level planning in the Lower Lakes. Contact the club for current availability, local advice and clubhouse access.
