About Kiama Harbour (Robertson Basin)
Kiama Harbour, historically known as Robertson Basin, is a compact working harbour in the centre of one of the South Coast's most recognisable towns. Fishing boats and suitable recreational vessels share a basin framed by heritage structures, public foreshore and Blowhole Point. We think the arrival is genuinely memorable: few small harbours place a crew so close to a famous blowhole, lighthouse, ocean pools, coastal walks, cafés and the heart of town.
Robertson Basin was officially opened in 1876 after years of construction created a deeper, protected mooring and linked Blowhole Point permanently to the mainland. That working-port history remains visible in renovated cargo sheds, fishermen's lockers and the shape of the waterfront. The basin still functions as a place for boat arrival and mooring, but it is not presented as a conventional visitor marina with bookable floating berths and a published catalogue of utilities.
Public parking and toilets are available around the harbour, while food, refreshments, accommodation and shops are close by in Kiama. The nearby rock pools, visitor centre, lighthouse and coastal reserves make time ashore unusually rewarding. What stands out to us is how much can be experienced on foot: even a short harbour call can become a walk around Blowhole Point, lunch in town and a deeper look at Kiama's maritime past.
The same coastal setting that gives the harbour its drama also limits access. Government planning material notes that harbour depth, weather and ocean swell significantly constrain entry to Robertson Basin. Mooring space is limited and working users must retain priority. No reliable current visitor package for shore power, berth water, fuel, pump-out, showers, repairs or overnight accommodation is published, so none should be assumed without direct approval from the responsible harbour authority.
Our take is that Kiama Harbour is best for smaller, suitable boats making a carefully planned fair-weather visit rather than larger vessels seeking full marina services. Contact Kiama Council or the relevant harbour manager before arrival, confirm whether space is available, and obtain current local guidance on depth and swell. Keep the stay flexible and have an alternative port or anchorage plan. When conditions and permission align, Robertson Basin offers a distinctive town-centre stop rich in scenery and history.
Services
Kiama Harbour provides working-harbour mooring and arrival space within Robertson Basin, but it does not publish a marina-style visitor booking system or detailed berth schedule. Contact Kiama Council or the responsible harbour authority before approaching to confirm whether a suitable space is available, what vessel dimensions can be accepted and whether any fee, time limit or operating condition applies.
Public parking and toilets are available at the harbour. Kiama's cafés, food outlets, shops, visitor services and accommodation are within easy walking distance, along with Blowhole Point, the lighthouse and ocean pools. These shoreside attractions make the basin convenient for an approved short stay even though dedicated marina amenities are limited.
Shore power, potable berth water, fuel, pump-out, showers, laundry, lifting and repairs are not confirmed public services at Robertson Basin. Plan to be self-sufficient and arrange those needs elsewhere. Harbour depth, ocean swell and weather can restrict safe entry, while commercial and working vessels may require manoeuvring room. Seek current local advice, assess the approach against the boat's draft and handling, and maintain a safe alternative plan if conditions deteriorate.
Ideal for
Smaller, self-sufficient coastal boats seeking an approved fair-weather stop within walking distance of Kiama's harbourfront, blowhole and town centre.
What we love
- A striking arrival beneath Blowhole Point
- Immediate access to central Kiama
- Rich working-harbour history since 1876
- Coastal walks and ocean pools nearby
- A compact waterfront made for exploring on foot
To keep in mind
Robertson Basin is a small working harbour, not a guaranteed visitor marina. Depth, swell and weather can restrict entry, and service facilities are limited. Obtain permission and current local guidance before arrival, remain self-sufficient and keep an alternative destination available if space or conditions are unsuitable.
