About Margate Marina
Margate Marina is a modern floating marina at Barretta on North West Bay, around 20 minutes south of Hobart and close to the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. Its combination of larger berths, secure access, fuel and a capable slipyard makes it far more than a local storage facility. We think it is one of southern Tasmania's most rounded boating bases: practical enough for maintenance and liveaboard life, yet exceptionally well placed for cruising Bruny Island and the Channel.
The operator lists 140 floating berths from 10 to 40 metres, all supplied with power and water. Wide fairways assist manoeuvring, while the engineered wave attenuator and breakwater strengthen the basin's protection. Daily boat checks, gated member access and 24-hour CCTV provide reassurance for owners away from their vessels. Exact berth dimensions, draft suitability, electrical supply and liveaboard approval still need to be confirmed before allocation.
Fuel is available from a floating pontoon around the clock, dispensing diesel and 91 unleaded through a self-service terminal that requires a physical credit card. The same pontoon provides a free pump-out during office hours, seven days a week, and visiting boats are asked to call ahead with an estimated arrival time. What stands out to us is that these environmental and refuelling services are accessible to visitors as well as established marina customers.
The slipyard handles vessels up to 18 metres and 23 tonnes using a hydraulic submersible trailer. Catamarans up to 10 metres wide can be considered within a lower published weight limit, and the yard includes washdown and hardstand work areas. Trailer storage, hardstand, launch and retrieval, a boat ramp, courtesy car, parking, and laundry and showers for approved liveaboards broaden the offer. Every lift requires confirmation of hull form, beam, draft and displacement.
Our take is that Margate Marina suits southern Tasmanian owners, cruising yachts, multihulls and motorboats wanting a secure base with genuine service depth. It is also an excellent logistics stop for crews preparing to explore the Channel. Phone ahead for fuel or pump-out access, reserve slipyard work early and check the marina's current approach directions before entering. With those simple preparations, Margate delivers the useful facilities of a city marina in a quieter coastal setting.
Services
Margate Marina provides 140 floating pontoon berths from 10 to 40 metres, with power and water at every berth. The basin includes an engineered wave attenuator, generous manoeuvring space, gated member access and 24-hour CCTV. Daily boat checks are advertised. Confirm berth width, current depth, electrical connection, liveaboard permission and availability for the vessel before applying.
The fuel pontoon dispenses diesel and 91 unleaded through a 24-hour self-service terminal using a physical credit card rather than contactless payment. A free vessel pump-out operates at the pontoon during office hours, seven days a week. Members and visiting boats can use these services, but the marina asks crews to telephone before approach and follow the published channel and refuelling procedure.
The slipyard uses a hydraulic trailer with a 23-tonne lift limit for vessels up to 18 metres. Catamarans up to 10 metres wide may be accepted subject to a 20-tonne limit and other fit considerations. Hardstand and trailer storage, washdown, launch and retrieval, a ramp, parking and a customer courtesy car are available. Laundry and showers support approved liveaboards. Reserve lifting and storage in advance and provide verified dimensions and displacement.
Ideal for
Southern Tasmanian yacht, multihull and motorboat owners wanting secure floating berths, reliable fuel, pump-out and a capable on-site slipyard.
What we love
- Floating berths from 10 to 40 metres
- Power and water at every berth
- Twenty-four-hour diesel and unleaded fuel
- Free pump-out during office hours
- A versatile 23-tonne slipyard
To keep in mind
Call ahead before approaching the fuel and pump-out pontoon and bring a physical credit card for fuel. Pump-out is limited to office hours. Slipyard acceptance depends on length, beam, hull form and weight, so supply verified specifications and reserve the lift before arrival.
