About Martin Street Boat Harbour

Martin Street Boat Harbour is a small working basin near the centre of Ballina, opening onto the Richmond River and carrying a long local maritime history. Existing licence holders use a harbour whose waterfront views and town proximity give it genuine character. We think the setting has considerable potential: cafés, supplies and Ballina's riverside public spaces are close by, while the harbour remains connected to the commercial and recreational life of the lower river.

The current basin is shallow and the official council project page says it is suitable only for small vessels. Existing berths and licences should not be mistaken for a conventional visitor marina with bookable transient space. Transport for NSW Maritime manages the Crown reserve, and any berth access must be confirmed with the responsible authority or current licence holder. Skippers should never enter or occupy an apparently empty position without permission and current depth advice.

Ballina Shire Council has developed a substantial upgrade concept, including 49 proposed berths, a tender area, a small day-use pontoon, utilities, waste services, parking and a future amenities building. Those elements describe a funded-planning ambition, not facilities that visitors can rely on today. What stands out to us is the care being taken to combine better boating access with public waterfront improvements, but the distinction between the existing harbour and the proposed design is essential.

Current public information does not promise shore power, potable water, toilets, showers, fuel, pump-out, lifting, repairs or secure visitor parking as operational marina services. Crews should arrive self-sufficient and arrange fuel or maintenance elsewhere in the Ballina area. Boats entering from sea must also assess the Richmond River bar using current official observations, weather, tide and Marine Rescue guidance. A sheltered basin after arrival does not make the coastal entrance routine.

Our take is that Martin Street Boat Harbour is most relevant to established local users and small craft with authorised access, rather than spontaneous cruising visitors. Its central position and heritage make it worth watching as the upgrade programme develops. Before planning a visit, ask Council or Transport for NSW what access currently exists, confirm actual depths and retain an alternative berth or anchorage. Used within those limits, the harbour remains an authentic piece of Ballina's working waterfront.

Services

Martin Street Boat Harbour currently provides a shallow basin with existing licensed berthing near central Ballina. The responsible Crown reserve manager is Transport for NSW Maritime, while Ballina Shire Council leads planning for a future upgrade. There is no published transient booking system, current berth inventory or general visitor allocation. Confirm permission, vessel-size limits and measured depth with the appropriate authority before entering or tying up.

The adopted concept proposes 49 larger berths, tender storage, a small day-use pontoon, washdown, electricity, water, waste services, parking and an amenities building. These are planned improvements and must not be treated as available facilities until the authorities announce delivery and commissioning. The present harbour is officially described as shallow and suitable only for small vessels.

Public fuel, pump-out, showers, laundry, lifting, hardstand, repairs and secure visitor services are not confirmed for current users. Arrive self-sufficient and organise those requirements elsewhere. Coastal arrivals must independently assess the Richmond River bar using current government information, forecast, tide and Marine Rescue advice. Keep a fallback plan if the harbour is inaccessible, full or unsuitable for the vessel's draft.

Ideal for

Authorised local small-craft owners and existing licence holders who value a central Ballina harbour with direct Richmond River access.

What we love

  • A central position close to Ballina town
  • Strong local maritime history and character
  • Scenic access to the Richmond River
  • A thoughtful long-term upgrade concept
  • Potential for improved public waterfront access

To keep in mind

The harbour is currently shallow and is not a conventional bookable visitor marina. Proposed berths and amenities are not yet operational services. Obtain permission and current depth advice from the responsible authority, arrive self-sufficient and assess the Richmond River bar independently.
