About Port Denison Boat Harbour (Dongara)
Port Denison Boat Harbour is a genuine working harbour three kilometres from Dongara, enclosed by east and west breakwaters and home to one of Western Australia's largest rock-lobster fleets. It supports commercial operators and recreational crews while the surrounding coast invites fishing, sailing, surfing and swimming. We think its appeal comes from that combination: robust regional infrastructure, an active maritime identity and the relaxed hospitality of the twin towns close by.
The harbour provides 48 boat pens, comprising one 15-metre and 47 20-metre positions, plus 12 dinghy pens. Single- and three-phase power, water and lighting are supplied. Accommodation can be offered casually or for longer terms but is in high demand, so contact the harbour office first and complete the applicable waiting-list or vessel-accommodation process. Registered harbour swing moorings are privately owned; there are no public swing moorings to occupy without permission.
The concrete service jetty and wharf provide power, water, lighting and fuel, with published load limits governing vessel, vehicle and crane use. A commercial jinker ramp and heavy-lift facility support maintenance and handling through their respective operators. Public launching is available from a separate dual-lane concrete ramp with a catwalk and sealed trailer parking south of the harbour. What stands out to us is the range of marine functions available in one compact regional port.
Fuel is supplied from the service jetty by Comen Fuel WA and is available around the clock by credit card. Public toilets sit near the service area and the ramp, while a fishing platform and cleaning table occupy the ocean side of the northern breakwater. Showers, laundry, Wi-Fi and sewage pump-out are not verified. Lifting, jinker use and maintenance are separate commercial arrangements, so crews should confirm limits, operator availability, insurance and charges before planning work.
Our take is that Port Denison is ideal for serious anglers, regional owners and coastal crews who value a protected working harbour with fuel and technical capability. It is not a resort marina where every visitor can arrive without notice. Check pen availability, service-jetty conditions, the latest weather, wave and notice-to-mariners information, and understand the difference between public and private moorings. With the correct booking and a seaworthy plan, Port Denison makes a capable base for exploring the Mid West coast.
Services
Port Denison Boat Harbour has 48 powered boat pens: one 15-metre position and 47 20-metre positions, plus 12 dinghy pens. Single- and three-phase power, water and lighting are provided. Pens are offered subject to demand and formal DTMI allocation. Speak with the harbour office, confirm availability and complete the waiting-list or accommodation form before treating a pen as reserved.
The service jetty and wharf provide utilities and fuel for loading, unloading and working access under published load and fee conditions. A commercial jinker ramp is administered by the local professional fishermen's association, while Bass Marine operates the heavy-lift facility. Both require separate booking and suitability confirmation. The public dual-lane ramp has a catwalk and sealed car-and-trailer parking.
Comen Fuel WA supplies fuel at the service jetty 24 hours a day by credit card. Public toilets, a fishing platform and a fish-cleaning table support day users. Harbour swing moorings are privately owned and none are public. Showers, laundry, Wi-Fi and sewage pump-out are not verified. Confirm service-jetty access, lifting limits, current fees, weather and navigation notices before visiting or arranging maintenance.
Ideal for
Mid West fishing, commercial and experienced recreational crews needing powered pens, round-the-clock fuel, launching and separately operated lifting support.
What we love
- A protected harbour with strong working character
- Forty-eight powered pens plus dinghy spaces
- Credit-card fuel available around the clock
- Heavy-lift and commercial jinker facilities
- Easy access to Dongara and Mid West fishing
To keep in mind
Boat pens are in high demand and require formal allocation. Harbour swing moorings are private, not public. Heavy lifting and jinker use are separate commercial services, while showers, laundry, Wi-Fi and pump-out are not verified, so plan these needs in advance.
