About Port Hedland Spoilbank Marina (Pirra Pirra)

Spoilbank Marina, also known as Pirra Pirra, is Port Hedland's modern recreational marine hub and a major upgrade for local boating. Two breakwaters protect a new basin containing cyclone-rated pens, while a large ramp, public fishing jetty and recreation spaces open the waterfront to boaters and non-boaters alike. We think its importance is easy to see: it gives the Pilbara community safer, more accessible infrastructure for fishing, crabbing and exploring northern waters.

The marina has 22 floating pens ranging from 10 to 20 metres. The mix includes standard monohull and dedicated catamaran positions at 10, 13 and 17 metres, plus larger 15-, 18- and 20-metre options. Accommodation is offered casually and for short or longer terms subject to demand and formal allocation. Provide accurate overall length, beam, draft, displacement and insurance, then complete the official enquiry and application process before considering a pen available.

A four-lane launching ramp is paired with two floating universal-access jetties and can be used across the tidal cycle. Transport WA still recommends extra care at low tide because reduced grip can complicate launching and retrieval. Parking for around 200 cars and trailers is planned near the entrance. What stands out to us is the public access: the ramp, paths along the breakwaters, fish-cleaning area and two-storey fishing jetty make the precinct useful well beyond its small pen inventory.

Fuel is explicitly unavailable at the marina and must be arranged elsewhere before launching. Pen services are still described as being finalised, so power, water and other berth inclusions require direct confirmation even though metered utility charges appear in the fee schedule. A conventional travel lift, pump-out, showers, laundry and Wi-Fi are not verified. Do not assume the broader maintenance hardstand is an open public boatyard; ask the operator about any approved use and contractor arrangements.

Our take is that Spoilbank best suits Port Hedland owners and capable visiting anglers who want modern launching and a limited number of secure floating pens. Cyclone-rated does not mean risk-free, and every owner needs to follow the current community information sheet, mooring guidelines and emergency directions. Confirm the pen, berth services and fuel plan, check tides and Pilbara notices, and launch conservatively. With that preparation, Pirra Pirra is a genuinely valuable new gateway to the region's coast.

Services

Spoilbank Marina provides 22 cyclone-rated floating pens from 10 to 20 metres. The layout includes monohull and catamaran positions, with fees based on pen or vessel length and higher rates for catamaran pens. Casual, short-term and long-term accommodation is subject to strong demand. Submit exact vessel dimensions, insurance and the official enquiry or application before expecting an allocation.

The four-lane ramp has two floating universal-access jetties and is available at all tides, although high-tide launching is recommended because low-water grip can be challenging. The precinct also includes extensive trailer parking, fish-cleaning facilities, paths on both breakwaters and a two-storey fishing jetty with an artificial reef beneath it. Follow Town and DTMI rules for public areas.

Fuel is not available at the marina. Pen services remain listed as being finalised, so confirm power, water, security access and any maintenance arrangements directly. Pump-out, travel lift, showers, laundry and Wi-Fi are not verified. Arrive fuelled, monitor tides and temporary Pilbara notices and keep a current cyclone plan. Cyclone-rated pens do not guarantee protection in every event; follow official directions promptly.

Ideal for

Port Hedland recreational owners and experienced Pilbara fishing crews seeking modern floating pens, all-tide launching and excellent public waterfront facilities.

What we love

  • Twenty-two new cyclone-rated floating pens
  • Dedicated catamaran berth options
  • A four-lane all-tide launching ramp
  • Universal-access jetties and major trailer parking
  • Fishing, cleaning and breakwater recreation areas

To keep in mind

Fuel is not available and pen services are still listed as being finalised. Launching at high tide is recommended for better ramp grip. Confirm every berth inclusion and maintain a current cyclone contingency; cyclone-rated infrastructure cannot remove all severe-weather risk.
