About Port of Apollo Bay

The Port of Apollo Bay is a compact working harbour and important passage stop on Victoria's exposed Great Ocean Road coast. Commercial fishing remains central to its identity, while recreational boats use the floating marina, swing moorings and short-term berths beneath the green Otway ranges. We think the port's value is much greater than its size suggests: it combines a functioning local fleet, vessel maintenance and a strategic refuge on a demanding stretch of Bass Strait.

The floating marina permanently accommodates 29 vessels, including 12 commercial fishing boats, and another 17 vessels occupy swing moorings. Visiting fishing and recreational craft can seek temporary berthing through the port office, with published short-stay categories extending to vessels above 30 metres. Space is limited and permits govern both long-term and casual occupation. Contact the port manager with full vessel dimensions, draft, insurance, arrival timing and intended stay before entering.

The Authority maintains the boat ramp, wharf, marina, moorings, lead lights and other navigation aids. Ongoing dredging addresses sand that naturally silts the entrance and inner harbour, while pest-control work manages kelp and invasive species. What stands out to us is the active management needed to keep the harbour useful: this is coastal infrastructure maintained against dynamic conditions, so current depths and directions matter more than an old cruising note or a saved chart plot.

Slipway operations support maintenance, repairs and marine surveys, with fees scaled by vessel length and separate daily yard charges. Contractors must be inducted, and work must follow port environmental rules. Refuelling takes place only in the designated area with an inducted person present; a single free 25-metre berth has a four-hour limit to support access to the third-party fuel service. Power, water, pump-out, showers, laundry and Wi-Fi are not verified as general visitor inclusions.

Our take is that Apollo Bay best suits experienced coastal skippers, fishing boats and passage crews who need a planned stop or safe refuge rather than resort-marina luxury. The port remains accessible for refuge, but visitors should never assume a free berth outside an emergency. Check weather, swell, dredging notices, entrance depths and port directions, then secure a permit or explicit instruction. With disciplined planning, Apollo Bay provides a valuable harbour and a rewarding connection to one of Australia's most dramatic coastlines.

Services

The Port of Apollo Bay manages 29 permanent floating-marina positions and 17 swing moorings, plus temporary berthing for visiting vessels. Long-term allocation may involve a waiting list, while casual permits use published daily vessel-length categories. Contact the port office before arrival with overall length, beam, draft, insurance and timing, and obtain the appropriate permit or explicit safe-refuge direction.

Port operations include dredging, navigation-aid maintenance, ramp and wharf upkeep and kelp or invasive-species control. Entrance and inner-harbour depths can change with siltation, so use current notices and port advice. The designated fuel area includes a free 25-metre berth limited to four hours for third-party refuelling; an inducted person must attend and other fuelling is tightly restricted.

The slipway supports maintenance, repair and marine surveys, with separate slipping and daily yard fees based on vessel size. Contractors require induction and approved environmental practices. General visitor access to power, water, pump-out, showers, laundry and Wi-Fi is not verified. Book works in advance, follow biosecurity rules and report any fuel or oil spill immediately. In heavy weather, seek instructions rather than choosing an unallocated berth or mooring.

Ideal for

Experienced Bass Strait passage crews, local fishing vessels and recreational owners needing permitted berthing, swing moorings, refuge or slipway support.

What we love

  • A strategically important harbour on the Great Ocean Road
  • A genuine working fishing-port atmosphere
  • Permanent, swing and short-term berthing options
  • Active dredging and navigation-aid management
  • A slipway for maintenance and marine surveys

To keep in mind

Space is limited and permits govern normal berthing and mooring. Entrance depths change with sand and kelp, so check current port advice. Fuel-area access is controlled and time limited, while general visitor amenities are not verified; safe-refuge arrivals should follow port directions.
