About Rottnest Island - Thomson Bay
Thomson Bay is the principal boating gateway to Wadjemup / Rottnest Island, placing private crews beside the main settlement, beaches and unmistakably clear Western Australian water. It is not a conventional mainland marina with one enclosed basin; instead, the Rottnest Island Authority manages a network of bookable swing moorings, jetty pens and beach pens. We think that variety is part of the magic, letting owners choose an island arrival that fits both boat and experience.
Thomson Bay has 33 rental swing moorings for vessels from 8 to 40 metres. Fuel Jetty, Hotel Jetty and Stark Jetty provide bookable pens in defined size ranges, while 25 Mediterranean-style Bathurst beach pens suit shallow-draft boats up to 7.5 metres. Facilities can be reserved up to 100 days ahead and popular periods fill quickly. Book the exact approved facility rather than assuming any free buoy, jetty space or beach position is available.
The Thomson Bay Fuel Jetty provides electronic self-service diesel, premium unleaded and unleaded fuel around the clock, along with potable water. Loading zones are limited to 20 minutes, and users of jetty pens must supply their own mooring lines. Island toilets, showers, supplies, dining and visitor services are available ashore around the settlement. What stands out to us is the ability to move from a properly arranged overnight mooring into a car-free island day within minutes.
Every private vessel must pay the applicable island admission fee, separate from the rental charge. Mooring colours carry specific meanings, unauthorised use attracts penalties and anchoring is prohibited over seagrass or reef. No liquid waste may be discharged anywhere in the marine reserve, and crews should retain it for an appropriate mainland facility or lawful disposal outside the reserve. Pets are not permitted, reflecting the island's protected environment and wildlife priorities.
Our take is that Thomson Bay is ideal for prepared Perth and Fremantle boaters seeking an iconic island stay rather than marina-style technical support. Reefs, shallow water, seasonal wind and busy holiday traffic make current charts, weather, notices and RIA guidance essential. Select the right pen or mooring, bring adequate lines and fill water tanks on the mainland where practical. With the booking and environmental rules respected, arriving by private boat is one of the most rewarding ways to experience Rottnest.
Services
Rottnest Island Authority offers bookable swing moorings, jetty pens and beach pens, with reservations opening up to 100 days ahead. Thomson Bay has 33 rental swing moorings for boats from 8 to 40 metres. Fuel, Hotel and Stark jetties have pens in stated size ranges, while 25 Bathurst beach pens suit shallow-draft boats up to 7.5 metres.
The Fuel Jetty supplies self-service diesel, premium unleaded and unleaded fuel 24/7, plus potable water. Jetty users must bring their own mooring lines, and loading zones have a 20-minute limit. Toilets, showers, food, supplies and visitor services are available in the settlement, but this is not a haul-out yard and no travel lift or full boatyard is verified.
Pay vessel admission as well as the facility rental, use only an authorised mooring or pen and observe the buoy-colour system. Liquid waste cannot be discharged anywhere in the marine reserve, and anchoring must avoid reef and seagrass. Check current marine maps, weather, notices and any event closures. Pets are prohibited, and fresh water is limited, so provision thoughtfully before departure.
