About Rous Head Harbour
Rous Head Harbour is a compact commercial boat harbour and marine-industrial precinct at North Fremantle, immediately beside the entrance to one of Australia's busiest working ports. It is a place for vessel work, permanent commercial operations and ferry activity rather than a recreational marina holiday. We think its value is clearest when described honestly: Rous Head is a highly useful service location for an arranged haul-out, not a casual berth for a passing cruiser.
Fremantle Ports identifies the harbour as a commercial facility, with an entrance maintained for working craft and controlled port operations around it. Permanent berths support fishing, workboats and precinct businesses. SFM Marine has a small number of wet pens at Northport, but its current information says they are fully occupied. There is no public transient-berth inventory, so an apparently open space must never be treated as permission to enter or tie up.
The major recreational-vessel capability is SFM Marine's lifting and hardstand yard. Its largest lift can handle vessels up to 200 tonnes and 10 metres of beam, supported by 65-tonne and 200-tonne work areas, covered bays, a blast shed and specialist maintenance arrangements. What stands out to us is the environmental discipline: lift, launch and spray-down treatment water is processed through a closed-loop recycling plant, while controlled contractor rules help manage safety and contamination risks.
Every haul-out requires an estimate, booking approval, proof of insurance and compliance with site rules. Only SFM staff or approved professional contractors may undertake regulated work such as antifouling preparation, painting, hot work, blasting and water blasting. Fuel is not verified as a public service within Rous Head itself; crews should arrange it elsewhere, including the adjoining Fremantle waterfront where appropriate. Showers, laundry and visitor-marina hospitality are not part of the public harbour offer.
Our take is that Rous Head best suits insured owners and commercial operators with a confirmed lift, repair or storage plan. The entrance lies beside major shipping movements, pilot boats, tugs and ferry traffic, so current port directions, VHF watch, wash and channel awareness are essential. Do not arrive speculatively: coordinate the movement, contractor and immediate lift or departure with the yard. Handled professionally, the harbour gives Fremantle boaters access to serious maintenance capability in an exceptionally strategic position.
Services
Rous Head Harbour is a commercial boat harbour, not a public visitor marina. Permanent berths serve fishing vessels, workboats and port-related businesses. SFM Marine reports that its small number of Northport wet pens are fully occupied. No casual recreational berth inventory is verified, and tying up before or after a lift is generally prohibited unless specifically coordinated.
SFM Marine provides lifting for vessels up to 200 tonnes and 10 metres of beam, hardstand, covered work bays, a blast shed and maintenance support. Proof of insurance and booking approval are required. Regulated work can be performed only by SFM staff or approved contractors, and owner-supplied shore-power leads must carry a current test tag.
Closed-loop treatment recycles lift, launch and spray-down water. Public fuel, pump-out, showers, laundry and visitor amenities are not verified within Rous Head Harbour, so arrange them separately. Port access and traffic rules apply, with large commercial vessels, tugs and ferries nearby. Confirm movement timing, VHF expectations, contractor access and a direct lift or departure plan before entering the harbour.
Ideal for
Insured recreational and commercial vessel owners with a confirmed lift, hardstand, repair or refit booking in Fremantle's Northport marine precinct.
What we love
- Two-hundred-tonne lifting capacity at Northport
- Hardstand and covered maintenance spaces
- A broad network of approved marine contractors
- Closed-loop water treatment for yard operations
- A strategic position at Fremantle's port entrance
To keep in mind
Rous Head is a commercial service harbour, not a casual visitor marina, and current wet pens are reported full. Never enter or tie up without approval. Book the lift, submit insurance, use approved contractors and coordinate movements around major port and ferry traffic.
