About RQYS Canaipa

RQYS Canaipa is the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron's private down-the-bay retreat at Canaipa Point on the north-eastern tip of Russell Island. Set across 1.1 hectares of lawns and waterfront grounds, it gives eligible members a peaceful counterpoint to the Squadron's busy Manly base. We think its charm is beautifully simple: arrive by boat, settle into an island rhythm and share an easy social space with people who understand why the journey matters.

This is not a public marina and it does not offer conventional overnight pens for general visitors. An all-weather anchorage lies nearby, while the pontoon provides mooring for tenders rather than berthing for the parent vessel. Access is reserved for eligible full-membership categories and their properly accompanied, signed-in guests. Social members cannot use the property independently, and all users should review the current Canaipa policy before planning a stay.

A full-time caretaker supports the facility, which includes toilets, showers, laundry, a swimming pool, covered barbecues, picnic spaces and extensive lawns suitable for play or approved camping. The newer Longhouse adds a comfortable social pavilion overlooking the pool and waterfront. What stands out to us is how useful these shoreside amenities are for crews on smaller boats: a hot shower, laundry and sheltered gathering space can transform a simple anchorage night.

Fuel, sewage pump-out, a travel lift, hardstand and boatyard services are not available at Canaipa. Provision, refuel and deal with vessel waste before leaving an appropriate mainland facility, and bring a capable tender for the transfer from anchorage. The caretaker's availability, guest limits, camping conditions, fire rules, pool use and any organised catering should be confirmed through the Squadron rather than inferred from a previous visit.

Our take is that Canaipa is ideal for eligible RQYS members who enjoy slow Moreton Bay cruising, anchoring and relaxed club companionship. Southern Moreton Bay contains shallow banks, channels, tidal flow and changeable weather, so current charts, tides and local guidance are essential. Confirm access, anchorage conditions and caretaker arrangements, then arrive self-sufficient. With the membership rules respected, Canaipa offers something rare: a welcoming island base that feels like an extension of the yacht club itself.

Services

RQYS Canaipa is a private club retreat for eligible full-member categories and their accompanied, signed-in guests. It has no public access and no conventional visitor marina. Boats use the nearby all-weather anchorage, while the pontoon is intended for tenders. Review the current club policy, carry proof of membership and contact the caretaker or Squadron before visiting.

Shoreside facilities include toilets, showers, laundry, a swimming pool, covered barbecues, picnic grounds, broad lawns and the Longhouse social pavilion. Camping can be available under conditions, and a resident caretaker supports the property. Confirm guest registration, caretaker hours, pool and barbecue rules, camping approval and any event or catering arrangement in advance.

There is no fuel dock, pump-out, travel lift, hardstand or boatyard at Canaipa. Arrive provisioned and manage fuel and waste at a suitable mainland facility. A reliable tender, appropriate safety equipment and secure anchoring gear are essential. Southern Moreton Bay's banks, channels, tides and weather require current charts and conservative planning, especially for a first visit or night arrival. Conditions can change quickly.

Ideal for

Eligible RQYS members seeking a tranquil southern Moreton Bay anchorage with excellent club amenities, lawns and relaxed island community ashore.

What we love

  • A private island-style retreat for club members
  • All-weather anchorage close to the grounds
  • Showers, laundry and a swimming pool
  • The Longhouse, barbecues and generous lawns
  • A resident caretaker supporting member visits

To keep in mind

Canaipa is private and not a public marina; eligibility, guest registration and current club policy apply. Parent vessels anchor nearby and use tenders at the pontoon. Arrive self-sufficient because fuel, pump-out and boatyard services are not available on site.
