About Shute Harbour Marine Terminal

Shute Harbour Marine Terminal is the operating council-owned gateway at the end of Whitsunday Drive, set beneath Conway National Park and facing directly towards the islands. Rebuilt after Tropical Cyclone Debbie, the two-level terminal reopened in 2021 with new pontoons, a resilient seawall and modern passenger facilities. We think it is one of the region's most useful mixed-purpose stops: a working ferry hub that also gives private and larger vessels access to short stays, serious fuel flow and freshwater.

Limited short-term berths are offered for vessels from 10 to 40 metres, with boats over 40 metres considered by prior arrangement. This is touch-and-go terminal berthing rather than a conventional holiday-marina inventory, so booking is strongly recommended. A six-knot limit applies within the harbour. First-time arrivals should contact the team for assistance, monitor ferry movements and follow the allocated pontoon instructions rather than approaching whichever berth appears open.

Fuel capability is a major strength. Pontoon 1 supplies high-flow diesel, with dispensers reaching a published 280 litres per minute, while Pontoon 2 provides diesel and premium unleaded 98. Fuel is available around the clock through pre-authorised card payment; vessels over 24 metres require a booking, and water is available during fuelling. What stands out to us is how well this setup serves both everyday private boats and larger commercial or expedition vessels moving through the Whitsundays.

Twenty-four-hour public amenities support boaters ashore, and the terminal's 74 Islands Bar & Bistro sells hot food, coffee, ice and bait during its published hours. Ferry, water-taxi and tour operators make this an active passenger precinct, while public parking includes short and longer-term paid options. Comprehensive CCTV covers the terminal, pontoons and car parks, and pontoon access uses security cards with after-hours locking. Free Wi-Fi is available within the terminal for operators and guests.

Our take is that the terminal is ideal for short operational stops, passenger transfers, fuel and water rather than a relaxed multi-night marina holiday. There is no verified public boatyard, travel lift, dry stack, pump-out or full chandlery onsite. Office hours also differ between weekdays and weekends, even though pre-authorised fuel can operate 24/7. Reserve the berth, organise the payment card and watch current weather or cyclone notices. With that preparation, Shute Harbour is a wonderfully direct launch point for Whitsunday passages.

Services

Shute Harbour Marine Terminal offers limited short-term berthing for vessels from 10 to 40 metres, with larger vessels considered by arrangement. The official fee schedule treats these as touch-and-go stays, and advance booking is recommended. A six-knot harbour limit applies. Contact the terminal with vessel dimensions, dates and assistance needs, then use only the berth assigned by staff.

Two fuel pontoons provide high-flow diesel, standard diesel and premium unleaded 98. Fuel can be accessed 24/7 using pre-authorised card payment, while vessels over 24 metres must book. Cash is not accepted and water is available during fuelling. The terminal also provides 24-hour public amenities, CCTV, security-card pontoon access, terminal Wi-Fi, paid parking, and food, coffee, ice and bait through the onsite bistro.

This is a transport terminal rather than a full-service marina. Boat lifting, hardstand, repairs, dry storage, sewage pump-out and a comprehensive chandlery are not verified onsite. Plan those requirements elsewhere. Monitor ferry traffic, current harbour notices and tropical weather, especially during the cyclone season, when short-stay berths or fuel access may close for safety. Confirm current office and bistro hours before arrival.

Ideal for

Private, commercial and larger vessels needing a booked short stop, passenger transfer, high-flow fuel and water at the doorstep of the Whitsundays.

What we love

  • Short-stay capacity for vessels to 40 metres
  • High-flow diesel for serious refuelling
  • Round-the-clock pre-authorised fuel access
  • Freshwater available while taking fuel
  • An immediate gateway to the Whitsunday Islands

To keep in mind

Berths are limited touch-and-go spaces within an active ferry terminal, not holiday-marina accommodation. Book ahead, observe the six-knot limit and arrange card payment. Tropical weather can suspend operations, while boatyard, pump-out and dry-storage services are not verified onsite.
