About Wollongong Harbour (Belmore Basin)
Wollongong Harbour and historic Belmore Basin form a compact working port beside the city centre, combining commercial fishing, yacht moorings, public waterfront space and immediate access to the Illawarra coast. This is not a conventional private marina with a reception dock and a uniform facilities list. We think its appeal is more distinctive: visiting crews can secure an arranged position within a heritage harbour and step ashore near beaches, cafés, restaurants and central Wollongong.
Wollongong Yacht Club manages ten moorings, primarily for members, with casual vacancies offered when regular holders are away. Club vessel guidelines set limits of 38 feet and eight tonnes, together with insurance, seaworthiness, registration and windage requirements. Casual berths within Belmore Basin are managed separately on behalf of NSW Crown Lands by the Wollongong Fisherman's Cooperative. Contact the correct manager early; a club-mooring enquiry does not reserve a basin berth, and every visiting boat needs explicit confirmation.
Short club-mooring stays can extend from about a week to several months when a vacancy exists, making Wollongong useful for some coastal itineraries rather than only an overnight pause. The working basin also has a slipway and workshop context, while the yacht club and kiosk add local boating community. What stands out to us is the chance to experience a real Illawarra harbour without being isolated from city life or the foreshore.
Facilities are fragmented between harbour users. Fuel, pump-out, berth-side power and water, visiting-crew showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, security, chandlery and lift capacity are not verified as generally available to casual boats. Confirm slipway access and technical work with the relevant operator rather than assuming working-harbour equipment is public. Arrive self-contained, carry a suitable tender if allocated a swing mooring and ask where dinghy landing, waste and shore access are permitted.
Our take is that Belmore Basin best suits capable coastal yachts and self-sufficient visitors who appreciate an arranged mooring, active fishing port and walkable city stop. The ocean entrance is exposed to Tasman Sea conditions, while the basin is compact and shared with commercial craft. Check current NSW charts, swell, weather and marine notices, keep clear of fishing operations and approach at low wash. If no confirmed space suits the boat, retain a practical alternative rather than treating the harbour as an all-weather marina refuge.
Services
Wollongong Yacht Club manages ten harbour moorings, with casual vacancies sometimes available when members are away. Club guidelines limit permanent-allocation vessels to 38 feet and eight tonnes and require registration, seaworthiness and $10 million third-party insurance. Casual berths inside Belmore Basin are managed separately by the Wollongong Fisherman's Cooperative, so contact the correct manager and obtain explicit confirmation before arrival.
Club mooring vacancies can suit stays from roughly a week to several months. Ask about the assigned tackle, tender landing, shore access and payment conditions. The basin also has commercial wharves, a slipway and workshop context, but these serve a working harbour and should not be assumed available for recreational maintenance without a direct booking.
Fuel, pump-out, berth-side utilities, visitor showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, security, chandlery and lifting capacity are not verified harbour-wide inclusions. Arrive fully self-contained and organise technical needs independently. Check current swell, weather, charts and marine notices for the exposed ocean approach, enter at low wash and keep clear of fishing vessels and operations within the compact basin.
Ideal for
Self-sufficient coastal yachts and visiting crews seeking an arranged mooring or basin berth beside Wollongong's beaches, dining and working waterfront.
What we love
- A characterful historic harbour beside the city
- Club moorings available casually when vacant
- Separate visitor berths by local arrangement
- An active yacht-club and fishing community
- Beaches, cafés and central Wollongong close ashore
To keep in mind
Club moorings and basin berths have different managers, so secure the exact allocation before arrival. Facilities are limited and fragmented, the entrance is exposed to ocean conditions, and commercial fishing activity must always be given room.
