Vessel-specific guide
Keelboat marina and berth requirements
For a keelboat, the controlling numbers are often draft and mast height rather than length alone. Published marina depth is not enough: owners need to understand the approach, the berth itself, tidal assumptions and any overhead restrictions.
Keelboats berth dimensions and facility requirements
Depth under the keel
Obtain the minimum maintained depth for the approach and berth, the datum used, and the marina’s allowance for silting or recent dredging.
Mast and rig access
Check bridge and powerline clearance on the entire approach, then ask whether riggers, mast storage or crane access are available.
Haul-out method
Confirm lift capacity, sling positioning, keel support and whether the yard routinely handles your hull and rig configuration.
Weather protection
Compare surge, wake, prevailing-wind exposure, fairway width and the berth orientation—not just the marketing description of a sheltered harbour.
Questions to send with an enquiry
- What minimum depth can you confirm at the berth and on approach?
- Are there overhead restrictions between open water and the berth?
- Can the yard support this keel type and displacement?
- What additional lines or fenders are recommended for the berth?
Decision rule
Get the controlling dimensions and service limits in writing. A ranking helps compare quality after a marina can safely accommodate the vessel; it cannot make an unsuitable berth fit.
